Many years ago, Narcissa had an idea for a children’s art program – one where they could experiment with art in a fun and relaxed environment. She always said, “there is no right way or wrong way to make art”. And she knew there were very limited opportunities for kids to experience art this way. So, with the help of the City of Woodbury and the Gloucester County Cultural & Heritage Commission, “Art in the Street” was born – a free art program for kids, that travelled to different neighborhoods throughout the City, for seven weeks every summer. Dozens of kids came every day, from Woodbury and throughout Gloucester County.
To commemorate the 10 year anniversary of “Art in the Street”, Narcissa and her woodworking friend Hart Puitz, created a wooden carousel with animals, and set it in Stewart Lake Park, where the children added their creative touches.
Sadly, 2009 was Narcissa’s final “Art in the Street”. But she left behind hundreds of children who she touched over the years, who spent some of their summer mornings working with her, discovering a passion for art and an enthusiasm for creative expression. Her legacy will be with us for many, many years.
